Saturday Bets! 2024 Winterbottom Stakes Day

The G1 action continues this weekend at Ascot with the running of the Winterbottom Stakes over 1200m while Caulfield will host the 137th edition of the G2 Zipping Classic over 2400m.

Boasting $1.5 million in prizemoney, the Winterbottom Stakes has grown in stature since its inception in 1952 with star sprinters heading west to target WA’s premier sprint race with recent winners including TAKEOVER TARGET (2008), BUFFERING (2013/2015) and PAULELE (2022).

The G2 Sandown Classic (renamed Zipping Classic after the four-time winner) also takes place this weekend. With prizemoney up to $750,000, it gives the stayers a final crack before the Spring officially comes to an end.

Last Saturday Nic Ashman tipped us into PORT LOCKROY at $18 in the G1 Railway Stakes The Sydney galloper started $10 after being heavily backed! You can grab his full set of tips via the link below

WINTERBOTTOM STAKES

1200m – Group 1 – Weight For Age

From the past 15 winners:

  • 5 have been Favourites

  • 9 have had a SP of $9 or less

  • 10 have won from Barriers 7 – 13

  • 10 have been 5YO or older

  • 8 have worn Saddlecloths 1 – 5

  • 5 raced in the Manikato Stakes in the same prep

  • OVERPASS is looking to become the first back-to-back winner of the event in over 20 years – HARDRADA (2003/2004)

Tip Via The Stats:

1. OVERPASS $2.90 – 2u

·      SP $2.90; 6YO; Saddlecloth 1; Back-to-back winner?

9. ROPE THEM IN $14 – 1u

·      Non favourite; Barrier 9

Nic Ashman Tip: MAHARBA $9.50

Ratings suggest he has come back in career best form. He ran some of the quickest late splits of the day first-up behind a flying BELLATRIX STAR then atoned with a career peak rating down the straight during Cup week. Maps to settle just behind midfield on a genuine tempo, which looks the perfect spot in a race of this shape.
