7 of the last 8 Doomben Cup winners followed the exact same script - they had a run in the G2 Hollindale Stakes on the Gold Coast, and then headed north and cashed in two weeks later in the G1 Doomben Cup.
The Doomben Cup stands as one of Queensland racing’s most prestigious staying contests, a WFA showdown that has tested some of the nation’s elite middle-distance gallopers since its inaugural running in 1933, when PENTHUES became the race’s first winner. Now in its 93rd edition and boasting a lucrative $1 million prizemoney purse, the Doomben Cup is contested over 2000m. While the race briefly shifted to 2200 metres between 2002 and 2006, changes to the Brisbane Cup ultimately saw the Doomben Cup return to its traditional distance, restoring its place as a premier feature on the Queensland Winter Carnival calendar. Over the decades, the race has produced an honour roll stacked with champions, including the legendary ROUGH HABIT, who claimed a remarkable hat-trick from 1991 to 1993, powerhouse galloper MIGHT AND POWER in 1998, talented Mare STREAMA in 2014, modern star ZAAKI in 2021, and dual winner HUETOR, whose back-to-back triumphs in 2022 and 2023 further cemented the race’s reputation as a true championship contest.

Trainer/Jockey Chat
With momentum building ahead of the Doomben Cup, several key figures are arriving at the meeting in exceptional form, creating a compelling narrative around both Jockey and Trainer performances.
Jockey Jordan Childs has been riding with remarkable confidence, consistently outperforming market expectations by an average of 7%, but his recent statistics elevate that reputation even further. Across his last 100 rides, Childs has exceeded expectations by an extraordinary 67% - that red-hot form makes his partnership with SHE'S A HUSTLER worth noting, as punters will see the pairing as a genuine threat capable of outperforming the odds. Trainer Graeme Begg also enters the race in outstanding touch. Traditionally outperforming market expectations by 8%, Begg has recently lifted that figure to an impressive 18% across his last 100 runners, underlining the strength and consistency of his stable. His decision to enter SHE'S A HUSTLER into the Cup adds another layer of confidence around the Mare’s chances.
Meanwhile, powerhouse trainer Chris Waller appears to have his stable firing at precisely the right time. Although Waller typically falls just short of market expectations by around 2%, his recent form has surged dramatically, with his runners exceeding expectations by 29% over the past 100 starts. That upswing is especially significant given the depth of talent he brings into the Doomben Cup, where he brings the trio of ASTERIX, BIRDMAN and KOVALICA - a powerful contingent capable of shaping the entire complexion of the race.
Here are the historical stats and trends to help you land the winner of the 2026 edition:
Favourites have historically held a strong edge in the Doomben Cup, producing 14 winners since 1991 and reinforcing the race’s tendency to reward proven class at the elite level.
Despite that trend, recent history suggests punters should not ignore value runners, with the last 7 winners who were not Favourites presenting SPs between $9 and $26, including the last 4 champions all saluting at double-figure odds.
Barrier draws have played a significant role, with Barriers 6 to 9 emerging as the prime launching pad after producing 5 of the past 9 winners - a notable advantage in a race where tactical positioning is critical. Only one winner has jumped from an inside draw (1-4) in the past decade – HUETOR (Barrier 2 in 2022).
Older males have shouldered 59kg to victory in 15 of the last 19 editions.
Mares have struggled to make their mark in recent decades, with only 3 Female gallopers winning the race since 1995, the most recent being KENEDNA in 2019.
Experience seems to count with 6 of the last 9 winners aged 6YO or older.
The key form reference continues to be the Hollindale Stakes, which has produced 7 of the last 8 Doomben Cup winners - although intriguingly, only 3 of those winners actually finished in the placings in the Hollindale itself.
Superstition followers may want to avoid Saddlecloth 7, which remarkably has not produced a winner since the legendary ROUGH HABIT carried it to victory back in 1991.

To maximise your chances based on historical data, look for a runner who is:
Away from the rail
Carrying 59kg
Ran in the Hollindale
Andy's Tip: 1. HALF YOURS $3.70
With such a small field, finding a winner means looking beyond the obvious form and focusing on the historical indicators - barrier, weight, and lead-up run. That points strongly towards HALF YOURS, who ticks all the right boxes. The Melbourne Cup winner may not have placed in the Hollindale, but we know you dont have to place in that race to be successful two weeks later. Drawn perfectly in Barrier 7 and carrying 59kg as a proven stayer, HALF YOURS now has the chance to emulate the great MIGHT AND POWER by completing the rare Melbourne Cup–Doomben Cup double.
Nic Ashman's Tip: 2. VAUBAN $9
Can't see much between PRIDE OF JENNI, BIRDMAN, HALF YOURS and SHE'S A HUSTLER. Both PRIDE JENNI and BIRDMAN post better ratings at distances below 2000m. SHE'S A HUSTLER peaks here but needs to lift a tad while HALF YOURS has the class but his racing pattern isn't suited to Doomben. VAUBAN is the fresh horse on the scene. He'll be midfield maybe closer, has won 2 of his 3 first-up runs in Australia and the other fresh run was 3rd to LINDERMANN. Looks good form for this and we're getting a great price to have a stab.
