COOLMORE STUD STAKES | The G1 Blueprint

The Coolmore Stud Stakes has become a major test of Australia's emerging sprinting talent, with recent history favouring horses early in their preparation. Third or fourth-up runners have supplied 80% of the last 10 winners, while the Roman Consul Stakes and Golden Rose are key lead-ups. Almost half of winners jumped from the outside third of the field, with successful runners coming from a variety of settling positions. Our database highlights the key trends across favourites, preparation, lead-up form and race position.

COOLMORE STUD STAKES

Distance: 1200m

Class: Group 1

Age: 3YO

Conditions: Set Weights

DO FAVOURITES DELIVER?

Favourites or equal favourites have won almost 46% of editions, but their recent record is considerably weaker, with just 30% successful over the last 10.

TENTYRIS ($2.90) and IN SECRET ($3.10) delivered for punters, but OZZMOSIS ($18) and MERCHANT NAVY ($19) demonstrated that the race can still produce an upset.

SPARGO's $51 victory in 1999 remains the biggest upset in the modern era.

DO YOU NEED AN INSIDE DRAW?

Split each field into three, regardless of size, and outside gates supplied 47% of winners, compared with 29% for middle gates and just 24% for inside draws.

Recent results reinforce the lack of any need for an inside barrier. BRAZEN BEAU won from gate 15, HOME AFFAIRS from 13 and SEPTEMBER RUN from 12, while FLYING ARTIE was successful from barrier one.

With Flemington's straight 1200m course, the draw needs to be assessed alongside the expected speed and racing lanes rather than in isolation.

WHAT'S THE SWEET SPOT IN THEIR PREP?

Third-up is the most successful preparation stage, accounting for almost 30% of winners. Combined, third and fourth-up runners supplied 50%.

The recent trend is even stronger, with 80% of the last 10 winners third or fourth-up. TENTYRIS, SWITZERLAND, OZZMOSIS and HOME AFFAIRS all struck third-up, while IN SECRET, SEPTEMBER RUN and EXCEEDANCE won fourth-up.

There are exceptions. SUNLIGHT and SEPOY won fifth-up, while FLYING ARTIE succeeded second-up. Being deep into a preparation isn't essential.

WHAT LEAD-UP FORM MATTERS?

A strong lead-up performance is a useful guide, with 70% of the last 10 winners finishing in the first three at their previous start.

The Roman Consul Stakes is a proven launchpad. SWITZERLAND, BRAZEN BEAU and ZOUSTAR all completed the Roman Consul–Coolmore double, while OZZMOSIS and JAPONISME won after placing in that race.

The Golden Rose is another important reference. IN SECRET and EXCEEDANCE both placed in the Golden Rose before winning at Flemington, while NECHITA completed the double.

But a disappointing lead-up isn't necessarily a deal-breaker. HOME AFFAIRS rebounded from ninth in The Everest, MERCHANT NAVY from tenth in the Golden Rose and SUNLIGHT from seventh in the Manikato Stakes.

WHERE DO WINNERS SETTLE?

The Coolmore has rewarded a variety of racing styles, with no overwhelming advantage to leaders or backmarkers.

Among the last 10 winners, 30% settled in the first three, 50% raced fourth to eighth and 20% settled ninth or worse.

TENTYRIS provided the latest example of a horse winning from well back, settling 11th before charging home. SWITZERLAND, SEPTEMBER RUN and FLYING ARTIE also won from the second half of the field.

But speed can be equally effective. HOME AFFAIRS and OZZMOSIS led throughout, while SUNLIGHT raced second.

The Flemington straight offers more than one winning approach.

CAN THE FILLIES BEAT THE COLTS?

Colts and geldings have dominated historically, accounting for almost three-quarters of winners. Fillies supplied just over a quarter, but their record deserves respect.

IN SECRET, SEPTEMBER RUN and SUNLIGHT all defeated the boys in recent editions, while earlier winners include ALINGHI, GOLD EDITION and NECHITA.

The fillies also enjoy a weight allowance under the race conditions, making them dangerous when they bring established Group-class sprinting form.

DOES EXPERIENCE MATTER?

The Coolmore is restricted to three-year-olds, but the amount of racing experience varies considerably.

Recent winners TENTYRIS, SWITZERLAND, OZZMOSIS and HOME AFFAIRS were all third-up, demonstrating that a lengthy spring campaign isn't required.

At the other extreme, JAPONISME won seventh-up, while WEEKEND HUSSLER succeeded sixth-up after winning the Caulfield Guineas.

The more important factor is whether a horse arrives at Flemington ready to produce a peak sprinting performance.

WHAT'S THE WINNING PROFILE?

Third or fourth-up, preferably coming off a top-three finish, with the Roman Consul Stakes and Golden Rose providing strong form references. Outside barriers have the strongest historical record, while midfield runners have enjoyed recent success. Colts and geldings dominate overall, but quality fillies remain a genuine threat.
