LIGHTNING STAKES HISTORY

The Lightning Stakes has produced several landmark moments. In 1958, the 2YO colt MISTING became the first juvenile to win the race, followed a year later by the filly RITMAR, though another 2YO wouldn’t salute until 1976 when DESIRABLE, trained by Colin Hayes, broke the drought. The race created further history in 1966 when CITIUS became the first 3YO filly to complete the Lightning–Oakleigh Plate double. Four years later, BLACK ONYX became the first horse to add a Newmarket Handicap to a Lightning victory. The sprinting bar was lifted again in 1987 when PLACID ARK swept the Victorian Autumn Group 1 sprint treble — Lightning, Oakleigh Plate and Newmarket — a feat only matched once, in 1992, by SCHILLACI. No horse has completed the treble since.
