Modern-era results reveal a clear profile: more than 70% of winners were second or third-up, while close to 90% started at $10 or shorter. Our database combines the King Charles III Stakes with its George Main Stakes history to explore preparation, barriers, lead-up form and race position.

KING CHARLES III STAKES

Distance: 1609m

Class: Group 1

Age: 3YO+

Conditions: WFA

DO BARRIERS MATTER?

Close to 90% of winners jumped from barriers 1–8, with almost two-thirds drawn 1–5. Field sizes were often small, though, so inside barriers naturally had more opportunities to produce winners.

HOW FIT DO THEY NEED TO BE?

More than 70% were second or third-up. Third-up alone supplied close to half the winners, while SHOOT OUT was the only winner to strike first-up in more than three decades.

WHAT’S THE IDEAL AGE?

Five-year-olds lead the way, supplying more than a third of winners.

WHERE DO WINNERS SETTLE?

Almost 45% of winners settled fourth, fith or sixth. DURBRIDGE was the only winner that led in more than three decades.

HOW IMPORTANT IS LEAD-UP FORM?

This is a hard race to turn your form around in with three-quarters of winners finishing first or second at their previous start. Just under half won that lead-up. CEOLWULF and ROAD TO ROCK both bounced back from sixth.

WHICH LEAD-UP RACES WORK BEST?

Across the combined history, the Theo Marks and Chelmsford supplied eight winners apiece—close to half between them. But the move to October has changed the preparation, making the newer lead-up pattern particularly relevant.

WHAT’S CHANGED IN THE OCTOBER ERA?

Every winner came through either the Epsom or 7 Stakes. CEOLWULF used the Epsom for both victories, while FANGIRL and AUTUMN GLOW came through the 7 Stakes.

DO FAVOURITES DELIVER?

Since 2014, favourites have won close to 70%, returning $442 profit from $100 bets—a 34% POT. Across the broader modern era, their strike rate drops to 43% for a $453 loss.

DO OUTSIDERS WIN?

ROAD TO ROCK was the biggest upset at $41, with no other winner returning more than $13. Close to 90% started at $10 or shorter.
