First run in 1899, the Memsie has been a 1400m contest since 1980 and gained Group 1 status in 2013.
And the honour roll is serious. PHAR LAP won it in 1931, AJAX won three straight from 1938–40 and LORD went one better with an extraordinary four consecutive victories from 1958–61.
The Memsie has also been a springboard to bigger things. SO YOU THINK is the most recent horse to complete the Memsie–Cox Plate double in 2010, following in the footsteps of MAKYBE DIVA and SUNLINE.

“Winner has a beautiful racing pattern and with little pressure up front was allowed to cruise through first section almost half a second below standard for G1 races. That said, he's gone from being 1L in front at the 400m to 3L ahead on the line - impressive!
COSMIC CRUSADER was luckless three-wide without cover - could've used race fitness to go forward.
BUCKAROO recorded the best last 1200m/1000m of the day and second fastest last 200m of the race. He's on track for the Underwood.”
