ree

R7 CRYSTAL MILE (1600 m)

1 7957 PINSTRIPED C Williams (3) 59.5 ($8.50)

2 X000 PORT LOCKROY J McNeil (7) 59.5 ($41)

3 2159 DESERT LIGHTNING (NZ) L Nolen (6) 58 ($6)

4 0X32 RISE AT DAWN (NZ) M Dee (2) 57.5 ($4.40)

5 3130 GOLDEN PATH (NZ) B Shinn (4) 57 ($4.40)

6 1263 EL ROCKO J Mott (8) 57 ($14)

7 X073 VON HAUKE (NZ) E Brown (5) 57 ($8.50)

8 8271 OH TOO GOOD D Lane (1) 56 ($4.20)

9 3460 RUMBLED AGAIN L Neindorf (9) 56 ($67)

BEST

(7) VON HAUKE was luckless in this race last year and looks ready to make amends. Smoked the clock in the Sandown Stakes and found the line again behind leaders last start. Third-up, drawn to settle midfield and finish over the top at good odds. (8) OH TOO GOOD thrashed her own sex last start and maps for the perfect trail behind the speed. Lightly raced mare in hot form and deserves her shot at Group 2 level. (5) GOLDEN PATH can lift sharply back in trip after racing below his best in the Turnbull.

DANGERS

(3) DESERT LIGHTNING endured wide runs in both the Underwood and Toorak but finds a softer set-up back to 1600m at The Valley. Expect sharp improvement. (4) RISE AT DAWN has been rock-solid on-pace all prep and ran fourth in a Doncaster at this trip — tough type who makes his own luck.

LONGSHOTS

(6) EL ROCKO likely leader who grows a leg if there’s any sting out.

VERDICT

(7) VON HAUKE to turn last year’s hard-luck run into redemption.

Summary: 7 – 8 – 3 – 4 – 6

R8 CIRKA McEWEN STAKES (1200 m)

1 0X41 JIGSAW L Bates (3) 58.5 $29

2 428X REGAL ZEUS D Stackhouse (6) 58.5 $29

3 7X12 TROPICUS D Lane (8) 58.5 $4.40

4 6X33 KLABEL M Zahra (1) 58.5 $26

5 10X1 CHARM STONE B Shinn (9) 56.5 $2.30

6 4417 TIGER SHARK C Williams (2) 56.5 $29

7 1X73 NIANCE J Childs (7) 56.5 $6

8 3112 BRIDAL WALTZ L Nolen (5) 56.5 $8.50

9 05X3 VESTAS B Melham (4) 56.5 $9.50

BEST

(5) CHARM STONE off a let-up with that unmistakable class edge. Dominant winner of the Manikato after a soft run off a slow tempo. Tricky draw the only knock — if Blake Shinn gets cover, she’s simply too good.

DANGERS

(3) TROPICUS led them up and stuck on bravely in the Schillaci when third to Giga Kick and Niance. Maps to control this and will take pegging back if left alone. (7) NIANCE made strong late ground in both the Moir and Schillaci despite tough runs. Genuine WFA mare who’s knocking on the door.

LONGSHOTS

(9) VESTAS showed sharp acceleration fresh, running the quickest last 400m of the meeting. Steps up to WFA but trending the right way and The Valley suits. (8) BRIDAL WALTZ draws to get the perfect run just behind the speed and can sneak into the finish.

VERDICT

(5) CHARM STONE to stamp her class and go back-to-back at The Valley.

Summary: 5 – 3 – 7 – 9 – 8

R9 DRUMMOND GOLF VASE (2040 m)

1 5X23 OBSERVER M Zahra (9) 57 $2

2 7640 HIGHVOL J Mott (1) 57 $14

3 1131 OPTIONS H Coffey (12) 57 $4.80

4 3100 ARCORA B Shinn (6) 57 $21

5 6038 PROVIDENCE J McDonald (14) 57 $7

6 X461 O'SHEAMUS D Lane (2) 57 $20

7 X510 KAKKOII H Bowman (11) 57 $51

8 2481 MATSUDA T Stockdale (13) 57 $20

9 5157 CROWN OF RUSSIA C Williams (4) 57 $29

10 X741 ZORB N/A (5) 57 $101

11 0X61 CRACK A DEEL J Allen (7) 57 $13

12 X510 ONE STEP CLOSER Z Lloyd (3) 57 $51

13 222 SAVISANTA B Melham (10) 57 $41

14 6479 POOR OL' JOHNY RAY B Allen (8) 57 $81

BEST

(6) O’SHEAMUS keeps building the right profile. Strong through the line winning at Warwick Farm over 1600 m and looks primed to stretch to 2000 m. John O’Shea has an excellent record in this race. Versatile and proven when tempo drops. (1) OBSERVER was luckless in the Caulfield Guineas after covering ground throughout. Genuine talent suited up in trip and gets Zahra to steer from a soft draw.

DANGERS

(3) OPTIONS should arguably be unbeaten — badly hampered in his only loss. Possesses a powerful turn of foot and if they're running on, can figure.

LONGSHOTS

(5) PROVIDENCE got too far back in the Gloaming but hit the line solidly. Improving type and can surprise if they roll along.

(7) KAKKOII won in sharp time at Sale two back and can bounce back with a more positive ride.

VERDICT

(6) O’SHEAMUS to outstay them at a good each-way quote and give John O’Shea another Vase success.

Summary: 6 – 1

R10 LADBROKES COX PLATE (2040 m)

1 X069 LIGHT INFANTRY MAN E Brown (9) 59 $51

2 X542 ANTINO B Shinn (6) 59 $3.90

3 9332 ATTRITION C Williams (2) 59 $34

4 X323 BUCKAROO M Zahra (4) 59 $16

5 2421 GLOBE B Melham (7) 59 $17

6 X133 VIA SISTINA J McDonald (5) 57 $2.40

7 X122 TREASURETHE MOMENT D Lane (1) 55.5 $6

8 X225 AELIANA H Bowman (8) 55.5 $8

9 X987 NEPOTISM Z Lloyd (3) 49.5 $21

BEST

(6) VIA SISTINA equal-fastest last 200m of the Makybe Diva, then strong late again in the Turnbull. Genuine Group 1 mare who thrives at 2000m and looks ready to peak.

(8) AELIANA wasn’t far off Via Sistina in either of those races and has matched her late sectionals both times. Big engine, soft draw, and proven under Bowman — she’s right in the mix.

DANGERS

(2) ANTINO keeps improving with racing. Sustains a long run, draws for a soft midfield trail, and is the one with tactical speed if the tempo drops. (7) TREASURETHE MOMENT hasn’t shown her early-spring sparkle since the Memsie setback but could surprise if she bounces back to full health.

LONGSHOTS

(9) NEPOTISM has had excuses in both starts this prep and is crying out for room to roll. Quickest 600–400 m split in the Run to the Rose and will relish the 2040 m. (4) BUCKAROO was solid in the early runs this prep before a firm deck brought him undone in the Caulfield Stakes. Expect a rebound on a fairer surface.

VERDICT

(6) VIA SISTINA to prove the class act at weight-for-age and deliver another Cox Plate.

Summary: 6 – 8 – 2 – 9
