VERDICT

SHINY NEW DEEL looks primed to go on with it after a confidence-boosting win. EISHAA is flying and gets her chance again from a perfect draw, while THE MUFFIN MAN is the improver with blinkers on. SAXON SPOT and SAVILLA round out the main threats, and a wet track could bring SIGIRIYA ROCK or PROCHESTER into play late.

(2) BERKELEY SQUARE — Finally draws a gate after four wide runs. His Bart Cummings effort was superb under pressure; ready to strike.

(7) GILDED WATER (GB) — Set that torrid pace in the Bart Cummings and still fought on for third. If he relaxes, he can win.

(3) ONESMOOTHOPERATOR (USA) — Last year’s winner who thrives at Geelong. Forget the Melbourne Cup miss — this is his level.

DANGERS

(5) WHISKY ON THE HILL (GB) — Honest stayer who continues to improve; right in this if tempo is moderate.

(4) TORRANZINO (NZ) — Rock-solid profile; stays well and maps beautifully.

LONGSHOTS

(9) FERNAO (IRE) — Lightly raced import on the up; drawn to get a soft trip and pinch a placing.

VERDICT

BERKELEY SQUARE finally gets the map and luck he’s been craving and looks ready to deliver. GILDED WATER brings elite staying form but must relax to finish it off. ONESMOOTHOPERATOR loves this track and can bounce back, while TORRANZINO and WHISKY ON THE HILL keep it deep.

RACE 8 — DUAL CHOICE PLATE (1200m)

BEST

(5) CAPPER THIRTYNINE — Flying without luck and keeps fronting up in the right races. On-speed and due.

(12) STOLI BOLI — Luckless at Flemington on the slower inside; fitness edge and dream map from gate one.

(6) PERSIAN SPIRIT — Explosive first-up win, then caught behind a crawl. Back to a genuine tempo.

DANGERS

(13) SPIONE — Lightly raced 5YO with talent; can measure up with breaks.

(7) PROVED (NZ) — Undefeated filly; wide alley but plenty of upside.

LONGSHOTS

(14) KIKO — Finally finds give in the ground; can spike.

CAPPER THIRTYNINE maps to control and is ready to land one. STOLI BOLI is the danger with the right draw and fitness, while PERSIAN SPIRIT rebounds if they roll along. PROVED has X-factor and KIKO is the smoky if it’s soft.
