Racing turns to Caulfield this weekend with a stacked card that features two important Group 1s that potentially could shape the campaigns of many horses during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
This article will examine historical stats for the major Group 1 races this weekend as well as providing you with tips and the link to our popular podcast 'Saturday Bets!' by Nic Ashman. The podcast includes Trackwalker Info and Nic's selections for Caulfield Guineas day 2024!
The 2024 Toorak Handicap ends a 10 race card on Saturday that features six Group races. The Toorak is a targeted race for many trainers however, many participants will also head to Flemington on November 9 to challenge for the Emirates Stakes. Hence, previous recent winners are held in high esteem such as MORE JOYOUS (2010), SOLZHENITSYN (2012, 2013) and I’M THUNDERSTRUCK (2021).
TOORAK HANDICAP – 1600m
3 of the last 8 winners have been favourites
Of those five previous winners who were not favourites, they won at double figure odds
5 of the last 6 winners have been 5 years of age or younger
5 of the last 6 winners have been 55kg or under
60% of winners since 1994 have come Barriers 1 – 8
Tip Via The Stats:
4. ANOTHER WILL $2.90 – 55kg; 5 year old; Barrier 1
6. ORCHESTRAL $10 – Under 55kgs; 4 year old; Barrier 6; Double digits
Nic Ashman Tip:
ANOTHER WILL has drawn gate 1 and may end up three back the rail following two longshots, which is less than ideal. But he has a left-handed jockey in Mick Dee which will help him extricate away from the fence. I think we have to back the jockey in here because if he gets the run the $3 will look very good. Our Trackwalker Info is saying the inside might be off early in the day but should come back into play late in the card. So maybe have a small piece of the $3 now then go again mid-meeting when everyone thinks the fence is off.

Earlier in the day, the Might And Power Stakes will take place with again – another opportunity to springboard into a Cox Plate or a Caulfield Cup a week later.

But for most, the GF is later in the prep. Out of the last 62 starters in the Cox Plate who have won the Might And Power Stakes – 58% have placed and 27% have done the double. The last horse to run the Might And Power and win the Caulfield Cup was MONGOLIAN KHAN (2015).
