VRC OAKS | The G1 Blueprint

The Wakeful Stakes is the standout lead-up to the VRC Oaks, and the first two across the line are the fillies to follow. The Wakeful has produced almost two-thirds of Oaks winners in the modern era. Of those winners, nearly 80% finished first or second in the Wakeful.

VRC OAKS

Distance: 2500m

Class: Group 1

Age: 3YO fillies

Conditions: Set Weights

START WITH THE WAKEFUL QUINELLA

The trend has sharpened in recent years. From 2018 to 2025, nearly 90% of Oaks winners came through the Wakeful, and every one of those fillies finished in the first two.

Give the runner-up a proper look. STRICTLY BUSINESS, ZARDOZI and PERSONAL all went one better in the Oaks after finishing second in the Wakeful. With another 500m to cover at Flemington, the question is which filly is better suited at 2500m.

WHERE ELSE SHOULD WE LOOK?

The Ethereal Stakes is the clearest alternative among the fillies’ races. PINOT and SET SQUARE both won it before taking out the Oaks, while ARAPAHO MISS came through a second in the same race.

There’s also a case for fillies who have taken on stronger company. SHE’S EXTREME ran third in the Spring Champion Stakes before winning the Oaks, while SAMANTHA MISS came off a third in the Cox Plate. A strong run around 2000m gives a filly outside the Wakeful form a credible case.

LOOK FOR A FILLY DEEP INTO HER PREPARATION

Almost three-quarters of Oaks winners with a known preparation stage were fifth, sixth or seventh-up. Sixth-up was the most common. The market has also been a useful guide, with almost 90% of modern-era winners starting at $10 or shorter.

THE BLUEPRINT

Start with a filly who finished first or second in the Wakeful, is fifth to seventh-up and is $10 or shorter. When weighing up the Wakeful winner and runner-up, give the edge to the filly you think will improve most over the extra 500m.
