Spring has arrived when they jump in the Winx Stakes - a Group 1 weight-for-age contest over 1400m at Randwick and the traditional opening act of Sydney's Spring Carnival.
First run as the Warwick Stakes in 1923, it moved permanently to Randwick in 2014 and was renamed for Winx when elevated to Group 1 status in 2018.
Its winners include Tulloch, Kingston Town, Super Impose, Sunline, Winx and Via Sistina. Winx won three straight from 2016–18.
One of its great upsets came in 1987 when Pablo's Pulse won at $501.
2025 Winx Stakes Result:
Via Sistina $2.80 / $1.35
Aeliana $2.10
Arapaho $5.00

The numbers paint a clear picture of how the Winx Stakes has evolved. Favourites have won 15 of the past 34 editions, but their recent record is far less convincing. Remove Winx’s three straight victories and market leaders have won just four of the past 17, while four of the last seven winners have started between $7.50 and $31.
The profile of the winner has also become increasingly distinctive. The past 11 winners have all been first-up, with eight returning from either a 133 or 140-day break. Mares have won eight editions since 2015, including the past three, while eight of the last 11 winners have been 6YO or younger. Recent winners have also tended to settle off the speed, with six of the past nine sitting eighth or worse at the 800m.
Historically, barriers 1–4 have produced 17 of the past 30 winners, although four of the past six have jumped from gates 7–12. Chris Waller has trained eight of the past 11 winners, while James McDonald has ridden four of the past six.
DATA PROFILE FOR 2026
1ST-UP • 133–140 DAYS • MARE • 6YO OR YOUNGER • OFF-PACE
BONUS: Waller • J-Mac • Barrier 1–4
WHO FITS?
Autumn Glow shapes as the data horse in what looms as a two‑Mare war. She ticks every historical box - 1UP off Championship Day 2, a 5YO Mare, and she lands the dream combo of J-Mac, Waller, and Barrier 3. It’s the exact blueprint this race has rewarded for a decade. And while Sheeza Alibi won’t give her an inch - and may well be the rival she keeps meeting all spring - the numbers say Autumn Glow walks in with the most complete setup.
NIC ASHMAN TIP |
"AUTUMN GLOW maps better than SHEZA ALIBI, who is likely to be three back the rail or worse and there's little between their ratings. I'd lean towards Waller's mare on that. BEIWACHT is a G1 winner this T&D, trial data strong and 1400m at this track suits on pacers. IDLE FLYER gets the right track pattern to suit her swooping style - she's the boilover horse I expect will exceed market expectations at $61." |

Great analysis once again Nick. What about Gringotts in the Winx? Won or placed at all but two of his 1400m starts. Decent first up record and looked the goods in fast trial at Warwick Farm beating Beiwacht by over 3 lengths on what should be similar conditions come Saturday. Definitely one for the exotics.
