EMPIRE ROSE STAKES | The G1 Blueprint

2 min read

The Empire Rose Stakes has a history of rewarding mares who can bounce back. More than half of winners finished outside the top three at their previous start, while almost half settled ninth or worse. Wide barriers have proven no major obstacle, and fourth or fifth-up runners account for 50% of winners. Our database reveals the key trends across preparation, lead-up form, barriers and race position.

DO FAVOURITES DELIVER?

Favourites or equal favourites have won just over 30% of editions. The recent record is similar, with favourites winning 30% of the last 10.

DO YOU NEED AN INSIDE DRAW?

Split each field into three, regardless of size, and outside gates supplied 41% of winners, compared with 35% for middle gates and just 24% for inside draws.

The last 10 editions offer little reason to fear a wide draw, with outside gates supplying 40% of winners.

WHAT LEAD-UP FORM MATTERS?

Winning your lead-up is far from essential. Just over a quarter of winners were successful at their previous start, while slightly more than half finished outside the first three.

WHERE DO WINNERS SETTLE?

Backmarkers have enjoyed the greatest success, with almost half of winners settling ninth or worse. Midfield runners supplied 28%, while 25% raced in the first three.

More recently, half of the winners settled ninth or worse.

DO OLDER MARES HAVE THE EDGE?

Four-year-olds lead the historical record, accounting for 40% of winners. Six-year-olds supplied 26% and five-year-olds 17%, meaning those three age groups dominate the race.

The recent trend has shifted towards older mares, with 70% of winners over the last 10 editions aged five or older.
