With 5 of the last 6 non-Favourite winners of the Tattersall’s Tiara having saluted at double-digit odds, punters should be wary of a trend that will have top-market backers looking over their shoulder.
The Tattersall’s Tiara, now in its 37th edition, closes the Australian racing season as the final G1 of the 2025/26 racing season - a fitting curtain call for some of the nation’s best Fillies and Mares. Run under WFA conditions over 1400m for $700,000, the race has evolved dramatically since its beginnings in 1989, when LA POSETTE won the inaugural running of what was then the Winter Stakes. Its rise through the ranks from a Listed race in 1992 to a G1 from 2007 onwards mirrors its growing prestige within the Queensland Carnival. While traditionally staged at Eagle Farm, the Tiara has occasionally been forced to roam - Doomben hosted in 2017 over 1350m during Eagle Farm’s well-documented surface issues, and Gold Coast stepped in for the 2015 edition. Since returning to Eagle Farm in 2019, the race has reaffirmed its identity as a true WFA test where class rises late in the season. Its honour roll is stacked with elite names including DANE RIPPER (1997), BONANOVA (1999/2000), RED TRACER (2013), INVINCIBELLA (2019) and BELLA NIPOTINA (2024) - winners who used the Tiara not just as a finale, but as a statement of their class.

The data again highlights a trio striking well above their usual benchmarks, led by Michael Rodd, who is in the midst of a genuine resurgence. A jockey who typically sits 3% above market expectations, Rodd is currently operating at a powerful 44% above expectations across his last 100 rides, a surge of form he brings to his engagement on AHHA AHHA. Not far behind is Jordan Childs, another rider trending sharply upward. Historically 7% above market expectations, Childs is now delivering at 35% above expectations in his latest 100 ride sample, adding further confidence as he partners race favourite SPLASH BACK.
The strength continues in the Training ranks, where Bjorn Baker - already known for outperforming the market - has lifted his strike to 20% above expectations with his most recent 100 runners. His representative WITHIN THE LAW arrives under a stable trending the right way, rounding out a compelling cluster of in‑form participants who shape the narrative of this race.
This is the final Saturday Bets! article for the 2025/26 season. Saturday Bets! will return in August for the first G1 of the 2026/27 season - the Winx Stakes.
Here are the historical stats and trends to help you land the winner of the 2026 edition:
The market has traditionally been a reliable guide in the Tattersall’s Tiara. Since 1991, Favourites have captured the race 14 times, including 2 of the past 5 editions, proving that class often rises to the top when Queensland’s premier ladies clash.
Backing the Favourite hasn't just been safe - it has been profitable. If our mate Average Joe had invested $100 on the race Favourite every year since 1991, they would be sitting on a remarkable profit of $1,775 - an exceptional feat in G1 racing.
Yet when the Favourite fails, value often follows. 5 of the last 6 winners that weren't market elects started between $10 and $21, highlighting a lucrative sweet spot where double-digit runners have repeatedly ambushed punters looking at the top of the market only.
Forget the inside draw - wide barriers have been the place to be, with 9 of the past 15 winners jumping from Barriers 9 to 16. The trend has only strengthened recently, with 4 of the last 5 winners launching from Barriers 9 to 15.
Position in running has mattered - 7 of the last 12 winners (including 5 of the last 7) were already within striking distance turning for home, sitting between 3rd and 6th before putting the race away in the straight. Backmarkers have found this race far harder to win, with 2 of the last 19 winners coming from the back of the field.
Youth has struggled against experience - only one Filly has managed to defeat her older rivals in the past 11 years, with STARTANTES breaking through in 2022. The Tiara has generally proven a race where seasoned Mares hold a decisive edge.
Mature Mares continue to dominate - 6 of the last 8 winners were either 5YO or 6YO, reinforcing the importance of strength, racing toughness and experience at this stage of the Queensland Winter Carnival.
Lead-up form has been remarkably consistent - since 2000, 20 winners have come through either the Stradbroke Handicap or the Dane Ripper Stakes, making those races the key reference points when assessing this year's field.
Not all lead-up runs are created equal - of the 10 winners since 2000 that emerged from the Dane Ripper, 7 finished in the quinella of that race. By comparison, only 4 of the 10 winners coming through the Stradbroke had finished in the quinella of that race.
Recent form is difficult to ignore - 9 of the last 13 winners arrived off a top-two finish in their previous start, indicating Mares already racing at peak performance levels are typically the ones capable of claiming the Tiara.
And to round off the G1 season, and those who love our quirky stat - Saddlecloth 9 has become one of the race's longest-running hoodoos – failing to produce a winner for 35 consecutive years.
To maximise your chances based on historical data, look for a runner who:
Has a wide gate
Ran in the Dane Ripper or Stradbroke
Is coming in hot
Andy's Tip: 6. GERRINGONG $6.50
GERRINGONG presents a profile that aligns strongly with the historical patterns of this race. She jumps from Barrier 13, a draw that has repeatedly proven advantageous in this event. As a Mare, she fits another key trend. Her second placing in the Dane Ripper is particularly significant, given that race’s superior strikerate as a lead‑up compared with the Stradbroke. Coupled with a top‑two finish last start and an opening quote of $6.50 that is unlikely to hold, she arrives with every major indicator in her favour as she looks to take out the final G1 of the season.
Nic Ashman's Tip: 6. GERRINGONG $6.50 / 3. MANAAL $7
"Level stake both of them. GERRINGONG has always shown G1 ability rating to this standard more than once in her career, but often gets taken on in front. Her lead-up was superb. MANAAL has mixed it with the best of her age/sex since she started racing and I love the fact that a top trainer like M Freedman has targeted this race as opposed to coming here as an afterthought."
