THOUSAND GUINEAS: What Makes A Winner?

First run at Caulfield in 1946, when SWEET CHIME claimed the inaugural edition, the Thousand Guineas has become one of Australia's premier races for three-year-old fillies, with an honour roll featuring champions MISS FINLAND, ATLANTIC JEWEL and GLOBAL GLAMOUR.

Originally contested over a mile (approximately 1609m), the distance was standardised to 1600m, with the race gaining Group 1 status in 1979.
History offers some strong clues.
Every winner since 2014 has shared a common race-shape trait: their average speed over the final 600m was faster than their overall race speed. Historical times suggest this is not a race where a filly can gas herself and expect to hold on - you need strength over the last 600m.
Most recent winners settled in the first five, regardless of race shape, while more than 80% finished top four at their previous start.
Double-digit barriers have proven costly, with just one of the 27 fillies drawn gate 10 or wider winning between 2014 and 2025. An economical run is key to conserving energy for a strong finish.
Preparation also matters, with approximately 70% of winners arriving third-up or fourth-up from a spell.
